What separates a heat pump from a straight air conditioner is one component. A reversing valve flips the direction the refrigerant travels, so the same compressor and the same coils that pull heat out of the house in August push heat into it in January. The thermostat decides which way that valve sits.

A straight-cool system in Florida still has to produce heat, and it does that with electric strip heat in the air handler: current through a coil. A heat pump makes the same warm air by moving heat that's already outside, and on a cool Florida morning there's plenty of it to move. In cooling the two are the same machine, and a heat pump cools exactly as well as the straight-cool unit of the same rating beside it, no better. The whole difference lives in the heating hours.

Over a Tampa Bay year that's a small pile of hours. In an all-electric home the heat pump is usually the straightforward call: you pick up the heating side for very little on top of the cooling side you were buying anyway. The harder case is a house that's comfortable everywhere except one room, because nothing done at the outdoor unit reaches a room the ducts never really served. That one is a ductless mini-split conversation and we'll say so.

Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Attention

A heat pump fails in ways a cooling-only system can't, and it does so in heating mode, on the few cold mornings a year that are easiest to shrug off.

• Cool air at the registers while the thermostat calls for heat, which points at the reversing valve or its solenoid coil more often than at the compressor
• Ice on the outdoor coil that's still sitting there an hour later, meaning defrost isn't starting or isn't finishing
• Auxiliary heat showing on the thermostat in mild weather, almost always a lockout or sensor problem rather than a sign the house needs more heat
• A breaker tripping when the system changes over between heating and cooling

Heat Pump Repair vs. Replacement

Most of what goes wrong is a part rather than a system. Beyond the failures any air conditioner can have, a heat pump adds a defrost board, the solenoid coil on the reversing valve, the low-voltage transformer feeding the controls, and a metering device that has to work in both directions. All of it is ordinary heating and cooling repair work.

Replacement earns the conversation when two things are true at once, not one: a repair running more than about a third of the cost of a new system, on a unit already past ten years. Even then you get both numbers before anything is ordered. Age by itself isn't a reason to replace a heat pump that still runs well, and neither is one bad part.
