Frozen AC Unit Repair
Thaw It Out, Find the Real Cause, and Stop the Ice From Coming Back
A frozen air conditioner is one of the most confusing problems a Florida homeowner runs into. The house is getting warmer, but when you walk outside you find ice wrapped around the copper lines or frost spreading across the indoor coil. It feels like the system is working too hard, when the truth is the opposite: ice means something is blocking your air conditioner from doing its job, and the longer it runs frozen, the more damage it does. Vortex Heating & Cooling repairs frozen AC units across West Florida, and just as important, we find the underlying cause so it does not happen again next week.
Why Your AC Freezes Up
Your air conditioner cools your home by moving warm indoor air across a cold evaporator coil. As long as enough warm air keeps flowing and the refrigerant is at the right pressure, the coil stays just cool enough to pull heat and moisture out of the air. Take away either one and the coil temperature drops below freezing. The humidity in your air then freezes onto the coil, layer after layer, until the coil is a solid block of ice and almost no air can move through the system at all.
Two problems cause the vast majority of frozen units. The first is restricted airflow, usually from a clogged filter, dirty evaporator coils, closed or blocked vents, or a weak blower motor. The second is low refrigerant, which almost always means a leak somewhere in the system. Either one starves the coil of the warmth it needs to stay above freezing, and ice is the result.
Warning Signs Your AC Is Frozen
- Warm or weak air from the vents while the system runs nonstop
- Visible ice or frost on the copper refrigerant lines or the outdoor unit
- Water pooling around the indoor air handler as ice melts
- A system that cools fine in the morning but quits by mid-afternoon
- Higher energy bills paired with worse cooling than usual
Why Frozen AC Units Are So Common in Florida
Ice can form on an air conditioner anywhere, but our climate stacks the deck. Systems here run close to year round, so filters load up faster and coils collect more grime than they ever would up north. That constant runtime means a small airflow problem in spring quietly becomes a frozen coil by the heart of summer, with no long off-season to give the equipment a rest.
Humidity is the other half of the problem. Every cubic foot of muggy Florida air carries moisture that is ready to freeze the instant it touches a too-cold coil, so a system that might only stumble in a drier climate ices over completely here. Add in the heavy demand of a West Florida August, when the unit runs almost without stopping, and a marginal system has no margin left. It is why the same homes tend to call us about ice summer after summer until the real cause finally gets fixed.
Our Frozen AC Repair Process
We do not just thaw the ice and send you on your way. Melting a frozen coil takes hours and tells you nothing about why it froze, so a quick reset almost always ends with the same call a few days later. Our job is to get your system running and make sure the ice stays gone.
- Safe shutdown and thaw. We stop the system from running frozen, which protects the compressor from liquid refrigerant, and let the coil thaw fully before we test anything.
- Airflow check. We inspect the filter, evaluate the evaporator coil, confirm the blower is moving the air it should, and look for duct restrictions that choke the system.
- Refrigerant and leak test. If airflow is healthy, we check the refrigerant charge and pressures. Low refrigerant means a leak, so we locate it, seal it, and recharge to the exact specification rather than just topping it off.
- Verify and explain. We run the system, confirm it is cooling and holding, and walk you through what caused the freeze and what it cost, with the price agreed up front.
Repair vs. Replacement
Most frozen units are a straightforward repair. But an older system that ices up again and again despite clean filters and proper refrigerant may be telling you the coil itself is failing. When that is the case, we lay out the honest math between continued repairs and an efficient system replacement, with financing available, so you can make the call that actually makes sense for your home.
