Duct Replacement
Stop Losing Comfort and Money Through Your Attic
Your HVAC system gets all the attention, but your ductwork is doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. It's the network of channels running through your attic, walls, and ceilings that delivers cooled and heated air to every room in your home. When those ducts are in good shape, you barely think about them. When they're not, you feel it everywhere — rooms that won't cool down, energy bills that keep climbing, dust that never seems to go away, and an HVAC system that runs constantly without keeping you comfortable.
The problem is that most homeowners never see their ductwork. It's hidden above the ceiling and out of sight, which means damage, deterioration, and leaks can go unnoticed for years. By the time the symptoms show up in your comfort and your utility bills, the problem has usually been getting worse for a long time.
Vortex Heating & Cooling provides complete air duct replacement services for homes and businesses across Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Hernando Counties. We're a family-owned company with over 23 years of HVAC experience, specializing in diagnosing ductwork problems and designing replacement systems that restore airflow, improve efficiency, and make your home feel the way it should. Every duct replacement estimate is free, on-site, and comes with honest recommendations — not a sales pitch.

Why Ductwork Fails in Florida
Florida is one of the hardest environments in the country on ductwork, and most homeowners have no idea why. Here's what's happening in your attic while your air conditioner runs.
- Extreme attic temperatures. On a typical summer day, your attic can reach 140°F or higher. Your ductwork sits in that environment for months on end. Over time, that heat degrades the materials — it dries out adhesives, weakens connections, and breaks down the outer jacket and insulation that keep conditioned air inside the ducts. The result is air that's already warmed up before it reaches your vents.
- Humidity and condensation. When cold air moves through ducts surrounded by superheated attic air, condensation forms on and around the ductwork. In a climate as humid as ours, this moisture creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew growth — both inside and outside the ducts. That musty smell coming from your vents? It's often mold that's been building up in your duct system for months or even years.
- Age and material breakdown. Most residential ductwork in Florida is flexible duct — the insulated, tube-like material connected to a supply plenum near your air handler. Flex duct has a typical lifespan of 10 to 15 years in our climate, sometimes longer with good maintenance, sometimes shorter if it wasn't installed well to begin with. The inner liner can tear, the insulation can compress and lose its R-value, and the connections at boots and plenums can loosen over time.
- Poor original installation. This is more common than most people realize. Ducts that are kinked, pinched, run too long without support, improperly sized, or connected with duct tape instead of proper mastic and mechanical fasteners will underperform from day one — and they'll deteriorate faster. We see this frequently in homes where the original builder used the lowest bidder for ductwork installation.
- Pest damage. Rats, mice, squirrels, and even raccoons can chew through or tear apart ductwork to build nests. Once pests enter your duct system, they leave behind droppings and contaminants that circulate through your home every time the air handler turns on. If you've had a pest problem in your attic, your ductwork should be inspected.
Signs Your Ductwork Needs to Be Replaced
You can't see most of your ductwork without climbing into the attic, but the symptoms of failing ducts show up in ways you can feel, hear, and see throughout your home.
- Rooms that won't cool down or heat up evenly. If some rooms in your home are consistently warmer or cooler than others — even with the thermostat set correctly, the issue is often ductwork that's leaking, kinked, or disconnected. Conditioned air is escaping into your attic before it ever reaches the room it's supposed to serve.
- Energy bills that keep rising. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, leaky ductwork can waste 20 to 30 percent of the air your system produces. That means up to a third of the energy you pay for is used to cool your attic rather than your living space. If your bills have been creeping up without an obvious explanation, your ducts are one of the first things to check.
- Excess dust in your home. When ducts have holes, tears, or loose connections, they pull in unfiltered attic air — along with insulation particles, dust, and other debris- and push it into your living spaces. If you find yourself dusting constantly or changing your air filter more often than usual, damaged ductwork is a likely culprit.
- Musty or stale odors from your vents. Mold and mildew growing inside ductwork produce a distinctive musty smell that you'll notice every time your system cycles on. This isn't just unpleasant; it's a potential health concern, especially for anyone in your household with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory sensitivities.
- Visible damage in the attic. If you can see ducts that are sagging, disconnected, crushed, torn, or have damaged insulation, that's a clear sign that replacement is needed. Duct tape repairs, despite the name, are not a long-term solution for damaged ductwork. They dry out and fail, often within a year or two in Florida's heat.
- Your ductwork is 15 or more years old. Even if you don't notice obvious symptoms, ductwork that's reached the 15-year mark in Florida has likely lost a significant amount of its original insulating value and seal integrity. If you're replacing your HVAC system, it's often the ideal time to replace the ductwork as well, giving your new equipment the delivery system it needs to perform at its best.
What Vortex Duct Replacement Includes
When we replace your ductwork, we don't just swap out the flex duct and call it a day. We approach every job as a system because your ductwork must be designed and installed to match your HVAC equipment, your home's layout, and Florida's unique climate demands.
Full ductwork inspection
We start by thoroughly evaluating your existing duct system, checking every run, connection, boot, and the supply plenum itself. We identify what's failed, what's underperforming, and whether any sections can be retained or if a full replacement is the best path forward.
Proper system design
We size and route your new ductwork based on your HVAC equipment's capacity and the specific needs of each room. Proper sizing ensures balanced airflow throughout your home, no more hot spots, cold spots, or rooms that never feel right.
Quality materials
We install ductwork with appropriate R-value insulation for Florida's climate, using properly rated flex duct, rigid duct, or a combination based on your home's requirements. All connections are sealed with mastic and secured with mechanical fasteners, not duct tape.
Code-compliant installation
Every duct replacement we perform meets Florida building codes and manufacturer specifications. We handle permitting and inspections so you don't have to worry about compliance.
System testing
After installation, we test airflow at every register to verify balanced delivery throughout your home. We check for leaks, confirm proper static pressure, and ensure your HVAC system is operating as it should with its new ductwork.
Should You Replace Ductwork When You Replace Your HVAC System?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends, but more often than not in Florida, yes.
Here's the logic. If your HVAC system is 10 to 15 years old and needs replacement, there's a good chance your ductwork is roughly the same age and has been deteriorating right alongside it. Installing a brand-new, high-efficiency air conditioner on a duct system that's leaking 25 percent of its air into the attic is like putting a new engine in a car with bald tires; you're not getting the full benefit of your investment.
We see this play out regularly: a homeowner spends several thousand dollars on a new system, and within weeks, they're calling because rooms still aren't cooling properly or their energy bills haven't improved as expected. The problem isn't the new equipment; it's the old ductwork that nobody evaluated before the installation.
At Vortex, we inspect your ductwork as part of every HVAC replacement estimate. If your ducts are in good shape, we'll tell you. If they need attention, we'll explain why and provide a clear price to address it. We'd rather have an honest conversation upfront than leave you with a system that underperforms.

What Our Clients Say
FAQs - Duct Replacement
How do I know if my ductwork needs to be replaced or just repaired?
If the damage is limited to a single section, a small tear, a loose connection, or a detached boot, a targeted repair may be all you need. But if your ductwork is over 15 years old, has damage in multiple areas, has lost its insulating value, or is contaminated with mold, full replacement is usually the more cost-effective and reliable solution. We'll inspect your entire duct system and provide an honest recommendation based on our findings.
